Betty Lynn joined the cast of "OZ" in 2000 as Suzanne Fitzgerald, birth mother of prisoner Ryan O'Reily (played by Dean Winters). Suzanne was involved with a protest group in the '60s, and went into the underground to escape prosecution. Suzanne has decided to turn herself in and wants to meet the son she hasn't seen since he was an infant.

After meeting Ryan and telling him the truth, Suzanne turns herself in and is sentenced to community service - setting up an inmate arts program at Oz.

Ryan is happy to have his mother there - so happy that he forces other prisoners to sign up for her classes. When a prisoner threatens to kill Suzanne, Ryan stabs him and drops the shank. His brother Cyril picks up the shank and kills the prisoner. Cyril is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death.
